One of my best friend, B, is French. We met during university studies in Sweden where we both were studying Business administration. At that time I had been studying French in school but was really struggling speaking. I had even spent a few months in Aix-en-Provence studying French, without an immediate effect. Many years later I have a relaxed and confident relationship to the french language. I’m not mastering it. But I speak it freely and I often get complimented that my accent is impeccable. My main language teacher between then and now has been B. Since we don’t even live in the same place the language injections that I have gotten from B have over the years been short but intense. We usually meet a couple of times each year; spending a few days together with our families or go on a weekend trips together. 2-3 days, 2-3 occasions each year, hanging out, only speaking French. I’ve come to realize that during the last 15 years I have not been learning French in a structured, standardised way. I’ve used another method where I’ve just been speaking french with a French. And it has been insanely effective.
Everyone is a language teacher
